Roofers in Cambridge

Cambridge roofing is dominated by two things: the colleges and their heritage roofs, and the pale Gault brick and clunch of the surrounding city. The college and historic-core buildings carry natural slate, clay tile, extensive lead flat roofs, parapet gutters and stone detailing, much of it listed to the highest grades — this is specialist conservation work, not general roofing, and lead, stone and traditional slating skills are in real demand. The Victorian and Edwardian terraces of the wider city are more conventional slate and clay tile.

The city sits on the edge of the fens in low-rainfall but exposed, flat country that takes cold easterly winds, and the local clunch (soft chalk) and Gault brick need sound roof-to-wall detailing to stay dry. Conservation areas cover much of central Cambridge, so materials and detailing on visible work are tightly controlled.

For homeowners here, the key is matching the standard of the surroundings: on period property use a roofer experienced in lead, parapet gutters and heritage slate, keep to traditional detailing in the conservation areas, and check listing status early — in central Cambridge it very often applies.
