Roofing in Belfast

Belfast's residential roofscape is the legacy of its industrial boom: dense streets of red-brick kitchen-house and parlour terraces across the Falls, Shankill and the east and south of the city, built for linen and shipyard workers and roofed in natural slate — much of it the prized Bangor Blue quarried just down the County Down coast until the mid-20th century. After a century or more the recurring problem is nail sickness: sound slates slipping because the iron fixings have rusted through, which is why full or partial re-slating rather than patch repair is usually the honest answer here.

The climate compounds it. Belfast sits in a bowl between the hills and the lough and takes persistent Atlantic rain and wind, so chimney stacks, lead valleys and the concealed box gutters on the larger terraces are under constant load, and shared party-wall gutters need repair coordinated with neighbours. Roughcast and pebbledash renders are common on the interwar stock, so the roof-to-wall junctions matter as much as the slate.

If you own a Belfast terrace, get the chimney, valley and gutter details surveyed properly rather than just the open slope — and if the roof is original Bangor Blue, use a roofer who will salvage and relay the good slate rather than stripping it for cheap imports, because genuine local slate is increasingly hard to replace.
