There are two Derbyshires as far as a roof is concerned, and they behave nothing alike. In the Peak District, from Buxton across to Glossop and down to Matlock, the vernacular is gritstone walls under heavy stone slate laid in diminishing courses, and the climate is genuinely severe. Buxton sits at around 300 metres and is one of the coldest and wettest towns in England; freeze-thaw there works mortar out of ridges and verges every winter, and Glossop takes the westerlies coming over the moor with very little in the way. Stone slate is beautiful, immensely heavy and slow to lay, and inside the national park you will usually be required to reinstate it in kind rather than substitute something lighter.

The east and south of the county are an industrial landscape instead. Ilkeston, Alfreton, Long Eaton, Swadlincote and Chesterfield grew on coal and lace and hosiery, which means street after street of Victorian terraces under Welsh slate, plus interwar and post-war estates around Derby. Much of that ground has been mined, and the legacy of historic settlement still shows in cracked stacks and distorted roof planes that a new covering alone will not cure. Chimney repairs sit unusually high among the services offered by the county's 173 listed firms, which is exactly what you would expect from a county of coal fires and exposed stacks.

The practical point is to match the contractor to the half of the county you live in. A firm that is excellent on Derby interwar semis may never have laid a stone slate roof, and vice versa. If you are in the national park, confirm the material requirement with the planning authority before you commission anything. And if your house sits on former coalfield, have the chimney assessed as a structure, not just as a flashing job.
