Hampshire has one of the most varied roofscapes in southern England. In the New Forest and the rural villages you still find genuine thatch — long straw and combed wheat reed on cob-walled cottages, much of it listed, needing a master thatcher on a 20–40 year re-ridge and re-coat cycle, not a general roofer. Elsewhere the vernacular is clay plain tile and tile-hanging, with the older market towns (Winchester, Romsey, Alresford) full of steep-pitched period roofs under conservation control.

The coast is the other half of the county. Around the Solent — Portsmouth, Gosport, Havant, Southampton Water — roofs take salt air and Channel storms, and Portsmouth's dense naval-era terraces bring the same slate-and-valley issues as any Victorian townscape, accelerated by the marine exposure. Flat-roofed extensions are common across the post-war suburbs.

For Hampshire homeowners: if you own thatch, budget properly and use an accredited thatcher — it's a craft, not a repair; near the Solent, expect salt to shorten the life of fixings and flashings; and in the conservation towns, check what you're allowed to use before pricing a re-roof.
