Bristol's topography and its Georgian inheritance combine into one very particular roofing problem. Clifton, Kingsdown, Redland and the terraces around the harbour were built with parapet walls hiding the roof from the street, and behind those parapets sits an M-shaped or butterfly roof draining into a central lead-lined valley gutter that runs the length of the building. It is elegant and it works, right up until leaves block the outlet, a lead joint splits, or someone patches it with bitumen. Then water enters at the centre of the house with nothing visible from the pavement to warn you. Anyone quoting on a Clifton terrace who has not asked to see inside the valley is not really quoting.

Away from the Georgian core the city is bylaw terraces in Bedminster, Bishopston and Easton, roofed in Welsh slate at shallow pitch, and post-war rebuilding in the centre after the Blitz that brought a large stock of flat roofs still being renewed today. Kingswood, Fishponds and Warmley add 1930s and 1960s suburban housing with double-Roman and interlocking concrete tiles. The city's hills matter practically too: steep, narrow streets make scaffolding access genuinely harder and more expensive in Totterdown or Cliftonwood than on a flat suburban plot, and that difference belongs in the quote rather than as a surprise later.
