Roofing in Caerphilly

Caerphilly county borough sits at the point where the south Wales valleys start to open out, and its housing is more mixed than the terraces of the heads of the valleys further north. The Rhymney and Sirhowy valleys running up through Bargoed, New Tredegar and Rhymney are classic industrial terrace country, but Caerphilly town, Risca, Blackwood and Hengoed carry a great deal of interwar and post-war municipal housing plus substantial modern estate development, much of it built on reclaimed colliery land. That mix means a roofer here needs to move comfortably between Victorian slate, 1950s clay tile and 1990s concrete interlocking, sometimes on the same street.

Rainwater goods are the local pressure point, and it is no accident that guttering is one of the most commonly listed services among the borough's 52 businesses. Original cast-iron gutters and downpipes survive on a lot of the older stock, and once the paint film fails, rust blows the joints apart and the water goes down the wall instead of the pipe. The consequence is the saturated gable and internal damp that gets misdiagnosed as rising damp far too often. Replacing cast iron with modern uPVC is straightforward on ordinary housing, though on anything listed or in the conservation area around Caerphilly Castle you should confirm first, since aluminium look-alikes are sometimes required.

If you are getting quotes, ask for the gutters and fascias to be assessed at the same time as the roof covering rather than as a separate visit. The scaffold is already up, the marginal cost is small, and the two problems are so often the same problem that treating them separately is usually false economy.
