Roofing in Denbighshire

Few counties in Wales contain such different roofing worlds within half an hour's drive. Rhyl and Prestatyn are seaside resort towns, with Victorian and Edwardian boarding houses subdivided into flats and HMOs, extensive 1960s and 1970s bungalow development, and a large amount of flat roofing on shop parades, extensions and post-war infill. Those flat roofs are the county's most persistent problem: first-generation bitumen felt has long since gone brittle, and the cheap overlay repairs that followed simply trapped water in the deck. It is telling that flat roofing sits among the top services offered by local firms.

Inland, the Vale of Clwyd is a different proposition entirely. Ruthin, Denbigh and Corwen are historic market towns with stone buildings, steep slate roofs and significant conservation areas, surrounded by farmsteads and long agricultural ranges, with the Clwydian Range designated as a National Landscape. Here the work is traditional slate, stone chimney heads, lead flashings and the constant battle against wind coming over the hills. Sea air reaches the coastal towns hard, and frost bites harder inland, so the same firm may need two quite different approaches depending on which end of the county the job is on.

If you have a flat roof in Rhyl or Prestatyn and it has been patched more than once, stop patching. A proper strip back to a sound deck with a modern single-ply or EPDM membrane, correctly falls-checked so water actually reaches the outlet, will outlast four rounds of overlay and usually costs less in total. Ask any quote to state whether it includes stripping the existing build-up or simply covering it, because that distinction is where most of the difference in price hides.
