Dundee's roofscape was shaped by jute. The mills drew in tens of thousands of workers and the city answered with dense tenement building at Lochee, Hilltown, Stobswell and Blackness, four storeys of Old Red Sandstone under Scots slate, with common closes and shared roofs above them. Broughty Ferry, where the mill owners lived, is the opposite extreme: large villas and mansions with elaborate roofs, turrets, multiple valleys, extensive leadwork and chimney stacks that are genuinely awkward to reach.

The city sits on the north bank of the Tay, catching haar off the North Sea and easterly wind funnelled up the estuary. Its slopes are steep, particularly on the flanks of the Law, and that combination of pitch, exposure and height makes scaffolding a meaningful share of the cost on almost any tenement job. It also makes the shared-roof question important. On a Dundee tenement the roof above the close is normally common property, and under the Tenement (Scotland) Act 2004 the cost of repair is divided between the flats. Organising that properly before work starts is the difference between a scheme that completes and one that stalls halfway.

The other significant cohort is the post-war city: the corporation estates at Fintry, Kirkton and Whitfield and the flat-roofed blocks that came with them. Flat roofing is the third most listed service among the 23 firms here, which tracks. Twenty-three businesses is a modest number for a city this size, five of them offering emergency call-out, so for anything non-urgent expect to wait and plan for it rather than taking whoever can start on Monday.
