East Ayrshire's roofs are largely a legacy of coal and of the housing built to serve it. Kilmarnock has its red sandstone Victorian tenements and terraces, but the bulk of the stock across Cumnock, Auchinleck, Galston and the Doon Valley is interwar and post-war municipal housing, much of it re-roofed once already in concrete interlocking tile through the seventies and eighties. Kilmarnock and Cumnock take harder frosts than Ayr or Troon, so freeze-thaw damage to mortar and to older ridge tiles is more pronounced.
