East Lothian is pantile country in the fullest sense. The red clay pantile came in through the Forth ports and settled into the vernacular of Prestonpans, Musselburgh, East Linton and the older wynds of Haddington, sitting alongside Scots slate on the grander Georgian frontages. Haddington in particular has one of the most complete historic burgh centres in Scotland, and much of it is listed or within a conservation area, which means like-for-like materials and, in many cases, formal consent before a single tile is changed.

The county's weather is often misread. This is one of the drier corners of Scotland, sitting in the rain shadow of the southern uplands, so homeowners assume their roofs have an easy life. What they actually face is the haar and a hard easterly off the North Sea, most punishing at North Berwick and along the Prestonpans shoreline. Salt gets into mortar, corrodes fixings and works away at exposed verges. Rubble walls, harled gables and crow-stepped skews all depend on sound pointing, and that is usually the first thing to go.

At the other end of the stock, Wallyford, Tranent and the newer estates around Blindwells have added thousands of homes roofed in concrete interlocking tiles. Those bring their own list: dry-fix ridge systems installed carelessly, mortar bedding used where it should not have been, and valley and abutment detailing rushed on a fast programme. Nine of the 37 firms here list roof repairs and six list slate work specifically, so the expertise exists on both sides of that divide. Ask directly which side a contractor works on before you let them near a period roof.
