Roofing in Essex

Essex roofing splits sharply between the old and the new. The historic towns — Colchester, Maldon, Saffron Walden — and the rural north (Constable country) are full of Victorian and earlier stock, with weatherboarding, clay plain tiles and pargeted, timber-framed cottages, much of it listed. But a huge share of the county is post-war: the new towns of Basildon and Harlow, and sprawling London-overspill estates, are roofed in mid-century concrete interlocking tiles on shallow pitches. Those concrete tiles are now reaching the age where they delaminate and lose their surface, and their low pitch leaves little margin for error on underlay and laps.

Essex has one of the longest coastlines of any English county, and that matters: from Southend round to Harwich, and out on the plotland bungalows of Canvey and the Dengie, roofs take salt and wind-driven rain that rusts fixings and lifts inadequately secured tiles and flat roofs. Flat roofs are everywhere on the interwar and post-war stock, so felt/GRP/single-ply renewal is bread-and-butter work.

For Essex owners: on a post-war estate the honest question is often whether to overhaul or fully re-roof the ageing concrete tiles, and on the coast, wind uplift and corrosion should drive the spec — mechanical fixing and non-ferrous nails, not just a like-for-like relay.
