Roofing in Fermanagh And Omagh

Fermanagh and Omagh is Northern Ireland's lakeland — the sprawling Erne waterways around Enniskillen and the rolling country up to Omagh and the Sperrins — and it is among the wettest districts in the UK. That single fact governs its roofing: pitches, headlaps, valleys and gutters all have to cope with genuinely heavy, frequent rainfall, and a roof detail that would be marginal in the drier east of England is a guaranteed leak here.

The stock is overwhelmingly rural — traditional slate farmhouses and cottages, solid town housing in Enniskillen and Omagh, and a large amount of modern detached bungalow and new-build on individual plots. Natural slate dominates the older roofs over rendered walls; the newer rural houses bring more complex roofs with hips, valleys and dormers. Damp, sheltered, low-lying lakeland positions also mean persistent moss and algae on north-facing slopes.

For owners here, the rain is the enemy to design against: generous headlaps, sound and well-sized valleys and gutters, and good ventilation to manage the damp. On older farmhouses, relay tired slate properly rather than patching, and keep north slopes and gutters clear of the moss the wet climate encourages.
