Roofing in Moray

Moray is the driest, sunniest corner of Scotland, and that genuinely changes what fails on a roof. The Laich of Moray, the coastal plain running from Forres through Elgin to Buckie, sits in a rain shadow, so the slow saturation damage so common on the west coast is much less of an issue. What Moray gets instead is wind and salt off the Moray Firth, plus occasional intense rainfall events that overwhelm undersized gutters and downpipes in a couple of hours rather than over a season.

The fishing towns show it most clearly. Buckie, Lossiemouth, Findochty and Portknockie are built gable-on to the sea in tight rows, roofed in slate and pantile, and their exposed verges, skews and chimney heads take a constant salt-laden battering. Fixings are the thing to specify carefully; ordinary galvanised nails and brackets have a short life within sight of that coast. Inland, Fochabers is a Georgian planned village laid out for the Gordon Castle estate and carries design expectations to match, while Elgin's cathedral-city core holds a large amount of listed sandstone.

Moray also has a roof type almost unique to it, the pagoda kiln roofs on the Speyside distilleries, a form the Elgin architect Charles Doig introduced in 1889 and which is still a working part of the landscape. Domestic work is a smaller market: 27 firms listed, averaging 4.6 stars, only two advertising emergency call-out. Notably, flashings appear among the most commonly listed services here, which fits a stock where the covering routinely outlasts the metalwork around chimneys, dormers and abutments. That is generally the place to look first.
