Stone slate is what makes roofing in west Oxfordshire expensive, and it is worth understanding why. Stonesfield slate, quarried around Woodstock and Chipping Norton until the trade died out in the early twentieth century, was won by leaving the stone out over winter so frost could split it along the bedding. Nobody produces it that way now, so every repair to a Stonesfield roof depends on salvage or on a compatible substitute, laid in diminishing courses with the largest slates at the eaves. Around Banbury the material changes to ironstone, giving the warm orange walls of north Oxfordshire, and towards Burford and the Cotswolds fringe the whole vernacular is stone under stone.
