The Borders is a region of stone burghs and hard frosts. Kelso and Jedburgh have elegant Georgian squares and abbey-town centres with extensive conservation areas; Hawick, Galashiels and Selkirk grew on wool and knitwear and are packed with steep terraces of mill housing; Peebles sits on the Tweed with a protected core of its own; and Eyemouth is a working fishing port taking whatever the North Sea sends.

Inland, the defining stress is temperature.
