Roofing in Shropshire

Shropshire is one of England's most rural counties, and its roofing work is shaped as much by heritage constraint as by weather. Shrewsbury's medieval core is a dense cluster of timber-framed, jettied buildings, most listed, most within a conservation area, and most carrying hand-made clay plain tiles on steep pitches over structures that were never truly straight to begin with. The Ironbridge Gorge is a World Heritage Site, and the Broseley and Jackfield tileworks that once supplied the region give the local roofscape its characteristic dark blue and red clay tiles. Replacing those with a modern machine-made equivalent is usually refused, and rightly so.

Telford is the counterweight: designated in 1968 and built out through the 1970s, it holds tens of thousands of homes of near-identical age, so concrete tile fatigue, degraded bitumen felt and first-generation uPVC fascias all arrive there in waves rather than one house at a time. Elsewhere the county is sandstone farmhouses, Welsh slate carried in from just over the border, and exposed upland around the Long Mynd, Clee Hills and Stiperstones where wind and freeze-thaw do most of the damage. Ludlow, Bishop's Castle, Much Wenlock and Bridgnorth all carry substantial conservation areas.

If your property is listed or in one of those areas, a conversation with Shropshire Council's conservation team before you accept a quote will save you money, not cost you it. And because the county is large and thinly populated, travel time is a real component of price here: expect a roofer from Shrewsbury or Telford to charge differently for Clun than for Shifnal, and ask for that to be itemised rather than buried.
